Wiblingen Abbey :: A Story in Black & White

1093! What a number, and this number is the date of the founding of the Benedictine Wiblingen Abbey. Europe is full of very old buildings. Being from the States, and although I have lived in Europe for many years, I am still amazed by these numbers. Old here is very, very old.

Places like the abbey are always so awesome to photograph.

Here's a story in Black & White

The Foggy Way through the German Forest - Vision Driven Black & White Photography

The Danube river, the Alps and a valley help to make Ulm a foggy place. Fog can be gloomy as well as mysterious. Fog can affect mood.

FOOD for THOUGHT --- BLACK is a Color | WHITE is a Color

Food for thought
(On a Sunday)

We see what we call black, which is the absence of light. If black is the absence of light, then how can we see black?

In the complete absence of light, our eyes could not perceive black at all because no light is reflected off whatever object there is. Hence, there is no reception, so to speak, to our eyes.

The same would be true for white.

Nevertheless, Black and White are colors ... to me

Quantity or Quality?

 From Capturing Exposures Magazine
Making Photographs :: Quantity or Quality?

Digital cameras allow us to take more photographs in a shorter space of time and to publish them within seconds. It's literally a snap!

Less is more. You won't really become a better photographer by simply snapping off a lot of random shots. And simply snapping away doesn't mean that you can replace quality with quantity, does it.

Making a photograph takes intent, knowledge, focus and, yes, hard work. Anyone who attempts to claim otherwise is being either naïve or ignorant. So, get out there and practice with intent and focus. Learn to look, see and think. Bring it all back to the darkroom and make that photograph you have in your mind’s eye.

Mile High City - The 16th Street Series

When I think of Colorado, I always picture two things: Downtown Denver and the Rockies.

This time round it was Denver for its highrise buildings.

Walking up and down and looking up on 16th street with my camera on a cloudy Sunday in July.

I learned some time ago that you should always look up. Look, See, Think!

When Black & White Won't Work :: Contemporary Color Photography

Most of my work is black & white. It's fairly hard for me to break away from it. Yet, when there is no choice, you go with what works best, what makes the photograph you envision it to be.

Photographs are made - and that's the truth

Ansel Adams is often on my mind. Two quotes of his that speak volumes.

You don't take a photograph, you make it. - Ansel Adams

Dodging and burning are steps to take care of mistakes God made in establishing tonal relationships. - Ansel Adams

The BIG 5 aka Love the Light

The Big Five

Light and Shadow = mood

Contrast = attention

Shape and Form = interest

Pattern = interest

Texture = emphasis

The QUALITY of light affects the mood of the photograph.

Communication through light, form and color: Black and White Photography

A fine art photographer makes a photograph by interpreting what the reality of a subject will be.

Photography is one form of visual language. When I use this language I am expressing, through light, form and color, my vision of the reality of the subject

Yes, all photographs are "manipulated"

Further to my point in my previous post,  A story about a visit to Carmel, California and the ignorant gallery employee,  Alan Ross talks about prints and how they were made.

A story about a visit to Carmel, California and the ignorant gallery employee

Words to the wise:

“Dodging and burning are steps to take care of mistakes God made in establishing tonal relationships”.  Ansel Adams

Back in August (2013) I visited a very well known photography gallery in Carmel, California. Wonderful work to be seen there such as the work of the Weston family and Ansel Adams. I was thrilled that they were open but highly perturbed by the young and extremely ignorant gallery worker.

To paraphrase the beginning of our exchange as I entered.

Gallery worker: Hi. None of the work has been manipulated like digital photography. All the work is from film photography.

Me: Really. What do you mean exactly when you say none of the work here has been manipulated?

Gallery worker: All the prints are traditionally made from the negative in a darkroom. They are not digitally manipulated.

Me: You mean to tell me that there have been no 'enhancements' done in the darkroom such as cropping, enlarging, or dodging and burning?

Gallery worker: Yes.

Me: I've got news for you. ALL photographs are enhanced be them film or digital. One form is not necessarily superior to the other by the way. Although traditional darkroom work is most certainly an art in itself.

Gallery worker is quiet.

I was not a happy camper hearing such ignorant words come out of the mouth of an employee of such a gallery.

This gallery needs to teach their employees (maybe it is only this employee) about how photographs are really made. People like me will flock to such a gallery just to see the work made by the greats. And when such a dimwit tries to engage me with non-sense, I walk away with a giant question mark above my head. How can this gallery have such a person speaking for them?

Here's a tip for the gallery owner: Have your employees read Ansel Adams' The Print, which details techniques for enhancing images in the darkroom.

These great fine art photographers represented at this gallery made their photographs to reflect their artistic vision. They made their vision by enhancing their work in the darkroom, and sometimes their vision changed over time with new prints. The making of a print is a combination of not only the technical use of the camera, but also creative technique in the darkroom. The film or digital negative is just one of the steps in the process of making a photograph.

Back on the saddle --- NEW Work :: Black and White Photographs

 Black and White Photography

After a long break from being clued to the Internet, I decided it's time to get back on the saddle.

First piece of news: I sold a print of Wrap it Up (Workers) through my website.

I made some fine photographs during my summer trip back to the States.
  • I started off by photographing lines and shadows at the Frankfurt Airport Hilton
  •  I walked in downtown Denver and shot a few skyscrapers
I'll start off my showing a few of the Frankfurt Airport Hilton Lines and Shadows.
